How do these sports evaluate a dog's suitability for real applications?

Obviously, some dogs that do sports are prepaired for real life applications while others are not ready. That being the case, are sports designed to really test a dog's worthiness as is OR are the K9 sports designed more or less just to see if a dog has what it takes to be further trained for the street.

I find it a matter of how you train the dog. I have learned alot from sport people about making a dog focus and teaching the dog different commands and drills that do have real life applications. From the PP trainers I have worked with I learned how to make the dog focus on the man as the target and how to build the dog's drives and aggression.

I personally would love to do a sport type one day. Friend of mine does schutz with her bordercollie and gsd and the dogs react to both situations.
